Sewing Updates: Seeing Blue

Hello fashionistas,

I trust you all are superb.

I have been busy doing the usual...

My friend was getting married and requested I make her Bridesmaids dresses as her wedding present. It was a bit of a short notice so I got to work immediately and took a trip to purchase the fabric.

She wanted royal blue and after trekking for hours I finally found a suitable fabric that was just barely enough for the number of girls.

And two days later, I was done with the dresses.

The bride was happy, the bridesmaids were happy and so I was happy too. Lol

I did manage to make an outfit for myself to wear at the ceremony as well. And surprisingly not at the last minute X_X

Oh yeah, my hair was styled by my lovely sister...she has inspired me to 'want' to style my natural hair more. I tend to do just two things with my hair; The Bun and The Puff.

Sewing Updates

Hi Everyone,

Its been a bit...and I am glad to say I have been able to catch up on my much needed rest...though I was somewhat forced into it (I was ill).

Despite my "rest" period, I have been able to get in a bit of work (sewing) and play (cooking).

Oh yeah, the wedding has come and gone, and the bride looked lovely. I was/am so proud of myself. I am waiting for the pictures from the bride to do a full post as I was unable to attend. But here are some table-top pictures of the dresses I made for the wedding party (A dressform is on my wishlist if you're wondering what to get me for Christmas :P).

First, the Maid of Honor's dress...AKA Chief Bridesmaid

Its a long flowing gown with a band detail.

This was one of the fastest dresses I have made. I used a metallic fabric for the underlining and lined with a single face raw silk in a matching color.

For the skirt part, I skipped the lining and used just the underlay to reduce bulk so I had to finish the joining at the waist with a bias tape cut out from the Raw Silk

 For the band I used the raw silk and interfaced with a stiff interfacing for structure. I also used my usual metallic zip.

I love this color and will def be making something for myself with this fabric

Next up, the bridesmaid dresses.

The dress isn't sized to the model in the picture so it doesn't show the true fit.

Peplum detail with a button. 

I made four of these dresses and it was a learning process for me. The lace was a stretchy lace and just when I'd think I'd got everything figured out the fabric would head out to a different direction.

In the end, the all turned out well and I conquered my fear of stretch lace!

For the zipper I skipped my usual metallic zip and opted for plastic zippers as this lace was quite soft and I didn't want it to catch in the zipper.

All in all the dresses were successful and lovely on the ladies and I have one more feather to add to my hat :D

Wedding Dress Update

The day is here. Today, the client will be picking up her dress along with the bridal party dresses and all appendages. She came in for a fitting last night and I had to make some changes to the dress.

I also completed the veil last week and she loved it. Here are some pictures.

I started out with this layered look but settled on the equal length later on

I cant wait for the wedding day when I'll see the bride fully dressed and can proudly say, "I made that" :D

I seriously feel like dancing...my very first wedding dress. This is no mean feat considering I started fashion school in February so you can understand my excitement and nervous anticipation.

Asoebi Sewing Rush

If you are Nigerian, then you are not new to the concept of "Asoebi".

Pronounced ASHO EYBEE: Nigerian outfits made from matching fabric to be worn by a group of people to a party, wedding or naming ceremony...Asoebi translated to English means "Family Cloth". It is a phenomenon seen at Nigerian events where groups of people wear similar clothes to indicate their close relationships

I spent the last one week (Well effectively three days since I do an office job two days of the week) working on Asoebi outfits for a wedding coming up on Saturday and even as at yesterday, I still got a call from someone wanting a last minute dress. Sadly I had to turn her down because I still have my dress to make tonight (whew!)

So its been one busy week for me...busy, but fulfilling. Nothing like seeing a completed dress on a client - suddenly all the stress disappears and all is well in my world :D At least until I remember the next batch of clothes. Lols.

So without further ado, here are the clothes I made in no particular order.

Dress one is a sleeveless flared dress with a Peter Pan Collar and Lace/Button details.

 I piped the collar and hemline with Pink Bias tape, the Lace and buttons running down the middle were an afterthought (after the fitting she wanted some more oomph to the dress) But its turned out better than when it was plain.

Dress Two: A sleeveless dress with pleats, rhinestones and a matching belt.

 Dress Three: Similar to Dress two but with sleeves. Unfortunately I am yet to take any pictures of the Client in it so this tabletop picture (that doesnt really show anything come to think of it :D) is all I've got.

All the dresses were fully lined with a pink whatsitsname "polyesterish" fabric.

And Finally, dress number four; my favorite of them all and the one that gave me the most satisfaction and least stress :D A dress for a little princess :D

This was very simple and easy to whip up. I added the lace trimmings to make it more playful.

I am quite pleased with the amount of work I was able to squeeze into three days (My body isn't so thrilled though).

Next up, my dress for tomorrow which I am about 20% done with. I plan to finish it tonight after work...yeah, busy night ahead.

Wedding Dress Update + A Peplum Top and A Smart Skirt

Its been one busy week for me. I was able to put in some time on the wedding project...stitched the top and bottom pieces, attached pockets and did a fitting with the bride (which was a good thing because she happens to have lost a few inches off her waistline - better now than when the dress has been fully completed). As a precaution I am going to shave off an extra inch as well...based on the experience we had during the traditional marriage period, she does tend to lose weight alot I sure wish my weight came off that easily.

Here are a couple of construction pictures.

I also worked on and completed another project. A smart skirt and a matching peplum top.

It was a pretty straight forward style so I decided to add some pizzazz  by piping the sleeves and attaching a couple of covered buttons.

The skirt was as straight to the point as they come.

I added metallic zippers to both pieces in keeping with the current trend.

And for a little fun detail for the top, I did a play of fabrics - alternating the self fabric with the matching lining. This gave me an idea for a top for myself which I'll hopefully find some time in the middle of my workload to make.

Anyways, I finished this up on Wednesday morning and commenced work on a slightly similar project of a skirt and a peplum top. But this is for a much younger lady so I get  to play around a bit more.

I can't wait to finish this batch of clothes and get back to the wedding project.
